Short naps

Why are my child’s naps so short?  At some point in your parenting journey, I am sure you have experienced the profound frustration of your child waking up after a very short nap and wondering how on earth to get them to sleep longer.  Hopefully this post will help.

Until 6 months, these naps are very normal.

Checklist for success:

·        Is your child’s room dark enough? The darker the room, the better the sleep.  If you can place your hand in front of your face while baby is sleeping and still see it, the room is too bright.

·        Are you following the eat play sleep routine?

·        Do you have a nap routine? Just like bedtime but abbreviated.  Ie change diaper, sing song, put sleep sack on, sound machine on

·        Monitoring their awake times/making sure they are not under or over tired

If all else fails and naps are not great for the day, I always encourage an early bedtime!
